What's That New Cat

Houston Zoo Tours

Dear omss,

Here's what's new at the Houston Zoo.

Caracal

What's That New Cat?

Meet Zama, our new male caracal. Zama is  trading time out on exhibit with our female foosa Riana. Caracal comes from the Turkish word "karakulak," meaning "black ear."

Caracals live in Central Africa, South Africa, West Africa, Southwest Asia, and the Middle East. They prefer the drier savannah, scrubland, and woodland regions, though will also inhabit evergreen and montane forests.

They are excellent jumpers and climbers. You'll often catch Zama tucked into a rock ledge at about eye level, just behind some bamboo branches... often looking right at you.

We hope you come out and pay him a visit!
