Dear omss,
The word busy doesn't seem to come close to how much is going on at at the shelter these days.  Below are just two of the many cases that we helping with.  In addition, one of our two biggest fundraiser is coming up quickly and the Wellness Center is busier than ever.
Thank you to everyone that supports our shelter.  We could not do it without you!

Is this right?

It was late and a torrential rain was coming down.  And there he was.  "Mr. Higgins" as he was quickly named was found abandoned near the shelter.  It took nearly 1/2 hour for 3 people to get him to come in.
Once inside the shelter, his true condition was seen.  Extremely thin, with severe hairloss and skin lesions, he whimpered in discomfort.  You could not touch his backup or he would respond to the pain of a touch.
The next morning brought even more concern.  He had explosive diarhea.  So, he was rushed to the Wellness Center to be examined by our vet.  The initial diagnosis was EPI (Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency).  But tests had to be run to confirm the diagnosis and medications were started to help get the dog stabilized.  This will be an expensive and long road to get this dog to be ready to be put up for adoption.
The second part, getting him to feel comfortable again.  He is extremely scared and confused.  How could anyone leave a dog out in the rain in this condition?  This is just one of the reasons that Second Chance is here.  Without help, this dog would soon die.  But, he is here and safe.  We will do all we can to help this dog get a Second Chance.
If you would like to help, please made a donation to the shelter.  This case alone will cost the shelter hundreds, if not thousands of dollars.  Very sad that pets like this are left out in the rain......

Saving labradors through our HSUS parnership!
We have spent over a week in VT helping to care for labs seized in a HSUS puppy mill rescue.  As of today, 58 dogs were rescued from a puppy mill breeder.  Once these dogs were removed from the property, they had to be moved to a temporary shelter while the case went through the legal process.
This meant that lots of help was needed to care for these poor labs.  So, we were there to help care for these wonderful dogs.  In a short time, they began gaining weight and learning to be happy dogs.  Their medical needs attended to, they are quickly becoming the beautiful dogs we all knew they were.
As an HSUS Emergency Placement Partner, the next step will be to help by taking in some of these dogs.  Once in our care, they will be spayed/neutered, get their final medical work completed, and then find them loving homes.
