David Horowitz defends anti-Muslim activist Nonie Darwish; Shalom Auslander on his testicles; Liel Leibovitz on "Tree of Life"

Palmer Commission finds Gaza blockade legal, does not demand apology
The Egyptian-born anti-Islamic activist Nonie Darwish, whose life story and outspoken views on Israel and the Arab world make her someone Jews should support, was unfairly tarred in Tablet
BY DAVID HOROWITZ
Tablet Magazine has published a bizarre attack by Jeremy Seth Davis on an incredibly brave Arab defender of Israel and the Jews. Nonie Darwish is the daughter of an Egyptian general who was chief of intelligence for Gamel Abdel Nasser. Nasser was the dictator whose armies invaded Israel in 1956, when Gaza was part of Egypt and the West Bank had been annexed by Jordan and nobody referred to Arabs as "Palestinians." Darwish's family lived in Gaza, and her father created the Fedayeen, the first terrorist organization dedicated to the murder of Jews and the destruction of the Jewish state. Her father was responsible for the murder of numerous Israeli civilians before he was killed by the Israeli Defense Forces in a targeted assassination. At the time, Nonie was 8 years old. More

Terrence Malick's new film—a cinematic meditation on God, grace, and the wretchedness of man—is an important and masterful work of art. It's also the least Jewish film ever made. More

A Tiny Ball of Fluff Arrives in the Australian Adventure

Tawny Frogmouth in Nest
The tawny frogmouths have a chick in their nest.
The zoo's first-ever tawny frogmouth chick has hatched!  On June 30, zoo keepers found a tiny white ball of fluff in the nest of Max and Henson in their exhibit on the Australian Adventure Plaza.  The pair had been living in the Australia Welcome Center, but moved to an outdoor home this spring.

The tiny chick weighed just 15 grams at five days old, and had not yet opened its eyes.  Though the parents are caring for the chick, zoo keepers offer two supplemental feedings every day to support the chick's development.

Tawny frogmouths are some of the best-camouflaged birds around.  Their mottled brown feathers, along with their habit of posing stock-still with beak pointed to the sky, make them nearly impossible to see in their wooded habitat.

Though there is a second egg in the frogmouths' nest, keepers are unsure whether it will hatch, since its due date has passed.  In the meantime, they are hopeful that this tiny chick will grow and thrive.

Mysterious Migration Of The Dragonfly
The female Pale Snaketail lacks an ovipositor, an organ common to many insects that assists in laying or depositing eggs, so she flies alone over the water, striking the tip of her abdomen through the water surface, each time discharging many eggs.
Mysterious Migration Of The Dragonfly

Like many birds and some butterflies, dragonflies migrate. But unlike other migratory creatures, naturalists have been unable to determine where or even why these insects migrate.

Regardless, at speeds of up to 60 miles per hour, they’ll get there in a hurry!

Dragonflies have been around a long time—they’ve roamed the earth for over 300 million years and are one of the more common insects found trapped in ancient amber.

To learn more about these common, but still mysterious creatures, read on…..

Blue Streak Special

There’s a rustling in the leaves. You look to see what made the sound, and bam—a blue streak vanishes into the duff. Was it a snake? A lizard? Was that intense cobalt color even real?

Yes, it was real. The creature responsible for the streak was a lizard called a skink. Now’s the time when the newborns hatch, and the intense blue tails of the juveniles are as bright as neon signs.

Why blue?  Read on to get the whole story…

Blue Streak Special
Skinks, such as this juvenile Southeastern Five-lined Skink above, live throughout the US and most of the world. The bright blue of their tail fades with age.
