Our First Attwater's Prairie Chick Has Hatched!
The first of this season, that is. Once very common on the coastal prairies of eastern Texas, the Attwater's prairie chicken is barely hanging on in a few small protected remnants of its native habitat. But the Houston Zoo has taken up it's cause and, since 1994, has been a major participant in a captive breeding program. Read all about it! |

Horticulture Day At The Zoo!

7:00 a.m. - 9:00 a.m. Join our Horticulture Manager and expert, Joe Williams, along with other plant and gardening enthusiasts here at the Houston Zoo. Take an intimate stroll across our grounds and learn all about the many species of lush and verdant flora and greenery flourishing on our 55 acres.
Gain access to the Zoo two hours before we open to the public and enjoy breakfast, while you get a behind-the-scenes look at what goes into the daily care of the thousands of plants growing at the Zoo.

The cute, fluffy little Attwater's Prairie chick in the picture above will grow up to look much like this. This bird is perhaps best known for its "booming" display, a characteristic male behavior that attracts hens during the breeding season.
