There are many ways a marriage can be tested. Inviting a strange cab driver into your home without informing your wife beforehand is one.
My wife says that I'm too nice, while I claim that she's just a very, very bad person. Around the time we started living together, we had a serious fight about it. It started when I came upstairs with a cab driver who'd taken me home from the university. He had to pee. She awoke to the sound of his flushing the toilet, and she walked into our living room not fully dressed. The skinny cab driver came out of the bathroom and gave her a polite "good morning" while zipping up. She responded with a quick "Oh my God" and ran back into the bedroom. More

"Trashing" Stephen Colbert for Bears

Omss-- Over the last two weeks, you’ve done a lot of great work to raise awareness about our polar, grizzly and black bears as part of our ColBEAR campaign. And as Bear Awareness Week winds down, I want to give you one last chance to “trash” Stephen Colbert… and help save some bears.

Omss,

We’ve got America thinking about bears. Since we launched our tongue-in-cheek ColBEAR campaign last week poking fun at Stephen Colbert for his ridiculous and hilarious attacks on bears…

  • One thousand plush bears – donated by caring people like you – were delivered to Stephen Colbert.

  • More than 57,000 people have told Mr. Colbert to stop bullying bears.

  • Nearly 80,000 people have watched our ColBEAR videos featuring Ed Asner and Cloris Leachman on YouTube.

And, most importantly, we’ve raised more than $24,000 to help protect the lives of polar bears, grizzly bears, black bears and other imperiled wildlife across the country!

Unfortunately, Stephen didn’t have the… ahem, spine to respond to our campaign, so I want to give you one last chance to let him know what you think of his baseless attacks on our bears.

“Trash” Stephen Colbert. Donate now to help purchase a bear-resistant trash bin that we’ll name in Colbert’s honor.

Bears, like a lot of us, are always looking for a free lunch… especially polar bears that live in the rugged Arctic.

Unfortunately, as climate change melts their habitat, more of our threatened polar bears are making their way inland. Some are even finding their way to human communities in their search for food.

Trouble can ensue when exposed garbage entices them near humans – rather than staying in the wild where bears belong.

That’s why for years Defenders of Wildlife has helped purchase bear-resistant garbage bins to help folks in bear country live peacefully with their ursine neighbors.

Now you can help us keep bears out of trouble… and take one last shot at Stephen Colbert’s anti-bear rants. Make a tax-deductible donation now to help purchase a bear-resistant trash bin and support other wildlife-saving efforts.

Unfortunately, this time we weren’t able to get the “bear facts” in front of Colbert’s millions of viewers. However, with your help, we can keep bears in the wild where they belong.

For the Bears,

Second Chance Animal Shelter, Inc.
Second Chance
Mission Statement

Sounds relatively straight forward. The common view held by most is that the shelter takes in those animals that, for a number of reasons, some good; some not so good, need shelter and care. But our work goes much deeper; much of which is not visible to our visitors who walk into the shelter and see the animals in our kennels. There is so much more that Second Chance does. We have been able to be far more reaching than simply a shelter that provides space for dogs and cats to be safe until their forever homes can be found. We have reached far beyond the borders of our little town of East Brookfield....

'In Touch' With
Your Cat's Health

Regular visits to the veterinarian are an essential part of keeping your cat healthy. An excellent way for you to keep tabs on him in between vet visits is to do your own nose-to-tail checkups at home.

Get in the habit of running your hands all over your cat's body whenever he's cuddling with you or you're grooming him. This is the best way to discover problems before they become serious.

Call your veterinarian if you find any of these conditions...

President's Message...

On the move.... That is the only way to describe the activity level at the shelter these days. It is hard for someone just walking in the shelter to fully realize all that is going on at once in the shelter. Right now the Wellness Center is performing spay/neuter surgeries 5 days a week. Thanks to grant funding from Petsmart Charities, all new medical equipment was purchased so that our facility is state of the art. The expectation is that we will do between 5,000 and 8,000 surgeries this year. A couple of times a month there are also vaccination clinics being held to further help keep pets healthy. Add to that, the Wellness Center is getting ready to embark on additional expansion. Thanks to a partnership with the Bay Path Vocational School, the Wellness Center will be getting a beautiful seminar room in the building. This is expected to take place later this fall. This will further expand the new training programs, enable us to provide training classes to a broader and larger range of people, and have space to expand existing, and start, new programs. Plans are also underway to add a thrift store on the premises to help raise much needed funds. As if that was not enough, an Eagle Scout has taken on building a dog park on the premises so the community pets can have a safe fenced in yard to enjoy. And that is only some of what is going on at the Wellness Center...

Tiger Cubs Caught on Camera

Tiger video
Spy on tigers in the wild © WWF
WWF camera traps recently captured footage of an astounding 12 tigers in just two months in the central Sumatran landscape of Bukit Tigapuluh. With only about 400 Sumatran tigers left in the wild, it's remarkable that the camera traps filmed not only two mothers with their cubs but also three young tiger siblings playfully chasing a leaf. Today Bukit Tigapuluh faces the looming threat of being cleared by the pulp and paper industry. Watch the camera traps of these beautiful cats and find out how WWF is urging companies and the Indonesian government to protect these forests that are home to tigers.

Boost in Nepal’s Rhino Population

Description
Young Indian rhinos in Nepal
© Michel Gunther/WWF-Canon
Good news: The National Rhino Census revealed a count of 534 greater one-horned rhinos in Nepal, marking an increase of 99 rhinos from three years ago. These numbers reflect the success of collective conservation efforts and are a result of improved rhino protection measures and management of habitat. WWF is working to continue this positive trend, urging even stronger antipoaching measures and protection of habitat, as poaching still remains a serious threat to rhinos. See the breakdown of the rhino numbers and learn how the rhinos were counted.

May's Featured Species

Indian Rhino
© Jeff Foott/WWF-US

Indian Rhinoceros
Rhinoceros unicornis

Status: Vulnerable

Basics: The Indian (or greater one-horned) rhinoceros is the largest of the three Asian rhinos. It has a single black horn about 8-24 inches long and a grey-brown hide with skin folds that give it an armor-plated appearance.

Threats: Poaching (for its horn); habitat fragmentation and destruction

Interesting Fact: Indian rhinos use communal dung heaps, where they often scrape their feet, leaving a scent as they move around. Unfortunately, poachers are well aware of this behavior, and use it to track rhinos in their illegal hunts.
