Our Forests, Our Wolves

Gray Wolf (Paul Nicklin/National Geographic Stock) Under Wyoming's wolf plan, wolves can be shot on sight throughout most of the state -- including our national forests.

Our national forests -- lands belonging to all Americans -- are meant for science-based, sustainable wildlife management... not animal elimination.

If you haven't already, speak out now for responsible management of our wolves on our national forests.

Farewell to Rodger

Rodger Schlickeisen (Photo: Jim Clark)Over the past 20 years, Defenders President Rodger Schlickeisen has covered a lot of ground.

From the forests of Yellowstone to the halls of Congress, Rodger's hands-on approach has made an incredible difference for our wildlife and wild places.

Renowned conservationist and Animal Planet host Jeff Corwin pays tribute to Rodger as our beloved president heads toward retirement on October 1st.

A Vulnerable Arctic

Arctic VideoA changing climate can have devastating effects on polar bears, lynx, caribou and other wildlife living in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

In a new report, Defenders' experts assessed the risks posed by climate change to 38 mammals that call the refuge home. Sixteen of them are rated either extremely or highly vulnerable to forecasted changes over the next 50 years.

Defenders released the report just as the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service opened the public comment period on the Arctic refuge’s draft Comprehensive Conservation Plan, which includes a proposal to permanently protect the sensitive coastal plain from oil and gas drilling.

Such a move offers hope for these at-risk Arctic animals, and Defenders is fighting for the added layer of protection.

Wins for Wildlife

Victory: Shark Bill Awaits Signature
This week, the California Senate overwhelmingly passed a bill that would ban trade in shark fins -- and could save the lives of millions of sharks. Defenders supporters sent more than 34,000 messages to their elected officials to secure passage of this shark-saving bill, which now awaits Governor Jerry Brown's signature.

Prairie Poison Banned
After a hard-fought court battle, Defenders won a legal victory for prairie dogs, black-footed ferrets and other prairie animals. Last month, a federal court barred the use of Rozol -- a terrible poison used to kill prairie dogs -- in the states of Montana, New Mexico, North Dakota and South Dakota.

Brighter Future for Sea Otters
California's sea otters have a brighter future thanks to Defenders-backed legislation and new proposed federal recovery rules. The law allows Californians to continue donating through their state income tax forms to a critical otter research fund. Meanwhile, the new federal rules give these playful marine mammals a better shot at recovery.

Defenders: On the Road in Montana

Montana's Wildlife License PlateMontana residents can now show their love for wildlife right on their bumper. This isn't just a bumper sticker, but a new license plate that highlights the Big Sky State's iconic wildlife.

Designed by our own Peter Corcoran, the plates feature an elk, a wolf, a brown bear and a bison, against the scenic backdrop of the Rocky Mountains.

Proceeds from the plates will help Defenders continue our work to protect wildlife in Montana and beyond.

Updating Mr. Higgins and other "special" pets

Second Chance Animal Shelter, Inc.
The Many Ways of Rescue
Items in need!

The shelter often has unique items that we are in need of.  Right now, our "unique" needs are:

Scissors!  We need scissors to cut up old bedding, towels, etc. to make rags for cleaning and beds for the pets.  Our scissors get a a lot of wear so we are always lookikng for more scissors.

Pressure Washer!  We ar ein need of a pressure washer to keep our new outdoor cement play areas clean.

Lawnmower!  With the opening of our new Dog Park in North Brookfield, we are in need of a lawn mower to keep the fenced in area mowed.

Thank you to anyone that can help with any of these donations.

42 is a record!

To say that our spay/neuter program is busy is an understatement!

In addition to all the owned pets that we are helping get spayed/neutered, we are now helping 12 other rescue/shelters by spaying/neutering their adoptable pets.

Every day during the week, we are providing these services.  This past month, we did an amazing 42 surgeries!  This is a testament to our amazing staff and the training that they have received.  Our staff is trained in the latest cutting edge technology so that surgeries are done with the latest techniques which make it safer for the pets, less time under anethesia, quicker recovery, and they are back to normal in no time!  We are very excited and proud of our accomplishment and what this means to finally being able to save more pets by stopping pet overpopulation.

Dear omss,

There are always those special pets that come through our door.  They are considered by many to be "less adoptable" simply because they are older, darker colored, have a medical issue, or some other similar reason.  But to us, they are the most special of all.  They need us the most and they need a home the most.  At any one time, we usually have a few of these special pets in our care.  Right now, we have a senior yorkie mix, Faye (an adorable pitbull), Mr. Higgins (who is a beautiful shepherd undergoing medical treatment), and several black cats.  All of them need a new home.

Update on Mr. Higgins
 Look at me!!
What a difference a month makes!  Mr. Higgins is doing great!  He is putting on weight, his hair is coming back, and he "talks" to everyone that he knows.  When he sees someone that he has met before, he begins his chatter and runs up to the front of the cage for rubs and loving.  What a beautiful boy!

Here are his latest updates and a picture of his from "before":

August 31, 2011
Mr Higgins is responding better to his new treatment and his hair is beginning to grow back. We are still working on getting some weight on him as he is still too thin to be neutered. He loves attention and "talks" to you. He is also very housebroken and waits patiently for his daily walks.

August 19, 2011: Mr Higgins, the shepherd that was left out in the rain near our shelter is improving. His tail wagged for the first time the other day! He is eating and slowly gaining some weight. Good news - his heartworm test was negative. Bad news - he is positive for lyme. We can't begin treating him for the lyme until he finishes up his other medication for his skin. He still has a long road ahead of him but he is looking better and even giving kisses! We are thrilled to see this compared to the scared dog of only a week ago.

Mr. Higgins will need more treatments to take care of his skin, lyme disease, and get neutered. But, he is on the road. We have set up a page for him for anyone that would like to help with his medical costs.

Here is his "before" picture":
