Chimps and Zoo Guests Beat the Heat with Frosty Treats! At 9:30 a.m. last Saturday, our chimps came into their yard to find that snowmen filled with yummy chimp treats had visited their exhibit in The African Forest! Several hundred pounds of 'snow' were used to create the snowmen and several smaller snow creatures. The snowmen had sliced oranges for eyes, carrots for the noses, and peanuts for their front buttons. Hidden inside were peanuts and sunflower seeds. The snowmens' scarves and hats proved almost as popular with the chimps as the snow! See a photo album and read the full story here. Zoo guests also enjoyed a 'snow field' just for them, created from 17,000 pounds of finely chipped ice on the lawn near Okapis. And winners of a scavenger hunt that led guests through each of our 13 Chill Zones were awarded with a coupon for free Blue Bell ice cream. Check out our Chill Zones on your next visit - it's all part of TXU Energy presents Chill Out at the Houston Zoo. |

Houston Zoo Vet Staff Treat Endangered Sea Turtles There are 5 species of sea turtles inhabiting the Gulf of Mexico, all of which are considered to be either threatened or endangered. There are many threats to these turtles including harmful plastics, nets and fishing hooks. When sea turtles are found injured on the upper Texas coast, they come to the Houston Zoo for treatment. So far this year, our own Dr. Joe Flanagan and the vet staff have treated over 30 injured sea turtles. Some go through rehabilitation at the Kipp Aquarium where you can see them on exhibit. Many are released back into the wild. To read about this incredibly important and meaningful work, visit our web page devoted to sea turtles.
