The political usage of chutzpah; a resurgence in American Jewish farming; liberals, Obama, and Moses

The past few months there’s been a rash of chutzpah sightings—that is, lots of public uses of the Yiddish word, if not any more actual chutzpah than usual. The best part: It's even being used correctly.
BY Michael Wex
More than one commentator criticizing Standard & Poor's decision to downgrade the U.S. credit rating has accused the agency of chutzpah; a Supreme Court justice wrote a recent dissent describing the petitioners' argument in a public finance case as an instance of the same quality, and a candidate for the Republican presidential nomination finds so much chutzpah in the incumbent's behavior that she is impelled to use the word before she's even learned to pronounce it. The past few months have seen a jump in chutzpah sightings—in public uses of the Yiddish word for nerve or audacity, if not in chutzpah itself, which has become so predictable a feature of public life that it now provokes weary resignation as often as outrage or fury. The trend toward local and organic foods has also helped fuel a resurgence in Jewish farming, a seeming oxymoron that actually has a long and deep history in this country More
BY Leah Koenig
Barack Obama isn't to blame for the Tea Party's surge. Liberals are. And if they want him to win re-election in 2012, they better listen to Moses and learn how to take initiative. More

Dear omss,
It's hard to imagine how busy the shelter is until you step inside.  Just one look on the website tells part of the story.  Usually the shelter has over 100 animals at any time and a bunch of wonderful events to help raise much needed funds to care for them.  Below are a few things that are going on now.  We hope that you can join us at one of these events!

Black Cat Special Adoption Promotion end August 31st!

NaomiThe shelter is flooded with cats and kittens.  Cats and kittens at our shelter generally get adopted quickly.  But, at this time of year, with the increase in cat and kittens coming through our doors, there are more and more black and black and white cats overlooked.  So, we want to do something about it!  Let's help this overlooked group of cats and kittens get adopted.  From July 15 through August 31st, all black (and black/white) cat adoption fees are reduced to $25.00.  All black (and black/white) kitten adoption fees are reduced to $75.00.  The shelter wants to help these special cats and kittens get adopted quicker.
It's very sad to us to watch these beautiful silky black cats be overlooked simply because of old myths.  Let's help them get a home!!

Update on Mr. HIggins!

Mr Higgins, the shepherd that was left out in the rain near our shelter is improving.  His tail wagged for the first time the other day!  He is eating and slowly gaining some weight.
Good news - his heartworm test was negative.  Bad news - he is positive for lyme.  We can't begin treating him for the lyme until he finishes up his other medication for his skin.
He still has a long road ahead of him but he is looking better and even giving kisses!  We are thrilled to see this compared to the scared dog of only a week ago.
Mr. Higgins will need more treatments to take care of his skin, lyme disease, and get neutered.  But, he is on the road.  We have set up a page for him for anyone that would like to help with his medical costs.  To view, just click on http://www.secondchanceanimals.org/index.htm
and scroll down the page.  Thank you to everyone for their kind words and support!
Have you signed up yet?
The Run Walk Wag will be here before you know it!  Have you signed up to run in the 5 or 10 K or walk in the 2 mile walk to help shelter pets?  Don't forget you can "wag a little harder" and collect pledges as part of your run or walk to help even more.  Get signed up today at:

And, don't forget about the night before spaghetti dinner.  If you are interested in attending the dinner (whether you are coming to the Run Walk Wag or not), please go to:

Thank you for being a part of our Second Chance family!!

Sincerely,

Sheryl Blancato

Baby Gorilla Poaching Attempt Thwarted

An infant mountain gorilla was rescued from poachers in Rwanda with help from the partnership of WWF, African Wildlife Foundation and Fauna & Flora International. A group of Rwandan and Congolese men were attempting to smuggle the baby female into Rwanda. The smugglers were arrested and an investigation into a possible larger network is under way. See more photos of the infant after her rescue.

  • Melting Sea Ice Forcing Polar Bears to Swim Longer Distances

A new study reveals that sea ice loss from climate change is causing polar bears to swim longer distances to find stable ice or reach land, resulting in greater risk to their cubs. The study used global positioning system (GPS) collars on female bears along with satellite imagery of sea ice to detect incidences of bears swimming more than 30 miles at a time. Find out what the study reveals about polar bear cubs.

Help Pressure Iceland to Stop Hunting Endangered Whales

    Stop Iceland's Whale Hunt

Iceland continues to hunt whales, in violation of international law. Last month, the U.S. certified that Iceland is defying the international ban on commercial whaling. President Obama must now decide whether to impose sanctions based on that determination. Please join us and urge the president to impose tough sanctions and hold Iceland accountable for its killing of endangered whales.
