More training classes will be added as they are scheduled...

Saturday, May 7th from 9AM - 11AM: Agility Manners

This will be offered for dogs and their owners to be introduced to skills useful to beginning agility training. Topics to be discussed will be recalls, stays, settling on a mat and target skills. This class will help dogs develop training behaviors to benefit everyday life as well as other sports like agility. Mary Jo Lavin will be instructing this class. Cost is $15.00. Dogs are welcome at this class. When you arrive, please leave your dog(s) in the car for the first 15-20 minutes so we can talk without distractions. Also, please bring a towel or mat for the dogs to lay on. Remember to bring a lot of small, soft treats (maybe skip or go light on dog's dinner? or feed later?). No prongs or flexis, please.

Thursday, May 12th from 6PM - 7PM: How Dogs Think and Learn

Kathy Menard will be teaching a class on how dogs think and learn. How do you teach a dog what you want? How many times does it take before he should know it? This hour long session will help you discover how your dog thinks and learns, and how to present things in a way he clearly understands. This will help you set reasonable expectations and goals, while communicating effectively with your dog....giving both you and him a sigh of relief! This class is for owners only, no dogs. Cost is $10.00.

Jet

Jet
Hello! My name is Jet. I am a beautiful black-coated female. I am 6 yrs old and I weigh about 68 lbs. I am housebroken, crate trained and of course very easy to walk on leash. I love living with my foster mom and I find it very comforting to rest my head on hers when we rest on the couch. I am a smaller girl, as Greys go. I guess I am just a petite little girl. I am living with two other dogs in my foster home. I love my humans very much and you will see that I bond to you very quickly. Like the rest of my breed, I am a sight hound and I have a real love of chasing pretty much all the small animals I see when we are outdoors. So, I can never be off leash unless it is in a fenced area for play and exercise. I will make a wonderful addition to your family since I love to be around all adults and kids that are 8 yrs old or more. I don't need to have a whole lot of exercise, just a daily walk and maybe a free romp in my fenced area. After that I am pretty much ready to lie around the house with you and just kind of chill. I do need to be kept warm in the winter and in the summer, don't let me spend too time in the hot sun, because I don't have a thick coat to protect me. I hardly ever bark, and am just very gentle and cuddly. Please make plans to come and visit with me. I am sure you will fall in love.

Please note that Jet is in foster care and can seen at the Shelter by appointment

To adopt, please visit www.secondchanceanimals.org and click on application to submit an adoption application.

Seeing the Forest for the Trees -- And Wildlife!

Lynx (Photo: BLM) The Obama administration has a plan for managing our national forests -- and it leaves out key protections for the wildlife, clean water and recreational opportunities that make these places so special.

So far, more than 87,000 Defenders supporters have given the administration an earful -- urging stronger rules to protect the more than 190 million acres of land and the imperiled lynx, marten and thousands of other species that depend on our national forests to survive.

If you haven't already -- please take action today and help us reach our goal of 100,000 messages before the May 16th deadline for public comments.

'Smart from the Start' Energy

Desert Tortoise (Jeff Aardal/Defenders of Wildlife)Federal plans for solar and other renewable energy could set us on a course for a clean energy future. But without proper planning, large-scale projects could doom threatened desert tortoises and other wildlife already struggling to survive.

Defenders and our partners are working to ensure that renewable energy plans are smart from the start -- and won't harm our wildlife and wild places.

Wins for Wildlife

Room to Roam
Thanks in part to more than 70,000 messages from Defenders supporters, Montana officials unveiled a breakthrough plan last month that could allow bison extra room to roam in the winter -- and avoid a senseless annual slaughter.

Safer for Sea Turtles
Palm Beach County Commissioners rejected a plan that would have harmed key nesting beaches for threatened and endangered sea turtles. Defenders played a key role in defeating the ill-advised project with testimony before the commission and more than 1,000 messages from Florida Defenders supporters.

Closure for Killing of Rare Whooper
An Indiana man and a juvenile have been convicted of killing a rare whooping crane, thanks to a citizen tip. The whooper -- the "matriarch" of the species' recovery in the wild -- was shot in 2009. Defenders and our conservation partners responded with a contribution to the reward fund.

Fighting for Forests

Wolverine (Paul Nicklin/National Geographic Stock)Since February, Defenders members and supporters have been helping to get the word out about how the proposed changes to the National Forest Management Act forest-planning rule (see Action of the Month story above) will weaken long-standing protections for wildlife.

In an impressive showing of support, many advocates took time off from their everyday lives to attend public meetings held by the Forest Service, wrote letters to their congressional leaders, and voiced concern in their local newspapers.

Desert Tortoise
Desert Tortoise (Beth Jackson, FWS)The threatened desert tortoise is easily disturbed by human activities -- that's why Defenders is working to ensure renewable energy projects take these desert dwellers into account.
