Oregon's Pioneering Vision for Wolves

Young Idaho Wolf (www.defenders.org) Oregon wolves got a tremendous boost last month as Governor John Kitzhaber helped shepherd the passage the most innovative wolf coexistence bill in the country. The historic legislation was passed unanimously in both houses of the state legislature.

The law -- developed collaboratively by wolf conservationists and ranchers -- includes compensation for wolf predations and funds important non-lethal coexistence tools for keeping wolves and livestock safe. Governor Kitzhaber was the only western governor to refute the backdoor delisting of wolves in the Northern Rockies.

Take Action Now: Thank Governor Kitzhaber for giving wolves in Oregon a brighter future for survival.

Withering Hope

President ObamaHis was a candidacy of promise and hope -- of change from one of the most anti-environment administrations in decades.

But more than two and a half years into his term, President Obama's record on conservation has left more than something to be desired.

Defenders' President Rodger Schlickeisen takes a look at the Obama administration's record -- and how it needs to be improved.

Batty for Guano!

Emerging Wildlife Conservation LeadersAs a promising young conservation leader, Defenders' Alli Srinivas is knee-deep in bat guano.

But it's all for a good cause. Harvesting bat poop -- which is used primarily as a fertilizer -- can have big impacts on these docile cave dwellers. As part of the Emerging Wildlife Conservation Leaders program, Alli and her colleagues are searching for safe ways to get at the goo without harming bats.

This program not only provides valuable training for Alli and other future leaders in wildlife conservation, it also gives a better future for bats and other wildlife.
