The many ways of rescue

Second Chance Animal Shelter, Inc.
The Many Ways of Rescue
Matching Donations

Did you know that many employers will match an employee's donation?

This is a great way to double your donation!  Check with your employer to see if they have a matching donation program.

How many?

We often are asked how many animals are being cared for at the shelter and in foster care.

While the number obviously varies from day to day, our shelter averages over 100 animals on any given day.

This is a lot of animals to care for, treat for any medical needs, and find the right forever home.  We are thankful for all our volunteers, foster homes, and supporters.  Without this network of support, we couldn't do what we do.

We are equally excited about how many pets that we help outside of the shelter.  Monday through Friday every week our Wellness Center provides 20-30 spay/neuter surgeries, plus vaccination clinics, and training programs.  This means that many more pets are able to stay in their homes, and out of the shelter.  We are proud to help in the community and be able to help so many pets.

Dear omss,

Rescue work is hard, with long hours, and lots and lots of resources and supplies needed.  People often don't realize that things that others throw away every day could be vital resources to a shelter.  In addition, where you work may also be a great resource for helping shelters, and your employer.  They often have supplies that they no long need or use.  Rather than throw them away, they would probably donate them.  This newsletter is an example of several things that many people may not realize would greatly help our shelter.

Hospital discards are lifesavers for rescue work
In human hospitals there are many supplies that they can only use once and must discard.  But, these items still are very useful to our rescue work.

Are you a labor or delivery nurse?  The hospital often uses erthromycin eye ointment and then throws the tube away.  We use this medication all the time to help with eye issues in cats.  If you work in a hospital and the hospital will allow these to be donated, please save them for us.
Other hospital items that we love to have are surgery towels, white bandage tape, gauze, and many other items.
If you know of a hospital/doctor's office that have items like these to donate, please let us know.
Manufacturer's Seconds
Their seconds are first with us!
There are many industries that throw away manufactured items that do not meet their standards for retail sale.  Some of these items may be of great use to shelters.
One example is masking tape that may not be cut to the right length or is the end roll.  We use tons of masking tape for marking carriers.  The size of the masking tape is not important to us.  Masking tape can be expensive for us since we go through so much of it.

If you work at a manufacturing facility and think there is an item that may be of use to us, please email us.  Their discards could help animals!
