Crickets for Breakfast
It's time for breakfast in Dr. Diversity's Rain Forest Research Station, so that means a meal of tasty crickets is on its way to Sunny and Cher, the black tree monitors. Using long tweezers, zoo keeper Dave Messmann waves a cricket in front of Cher's snout, hoping to whet her appetite. "Are you hungry this morning?" Messmann asks. At first, Cher turns away, but decides she's hungry after all and devours four crickets. Sunny, on the other hand, hangs out on a branch, completely uninterested in the crickets. "He's holding out for a mouse," Messmann explains. The lizards get one mouse apiece each week. Black tree monitors are closely related to Komodo dragons, so they share the characteristic long neck, razor-sharp teeth, and strong tail common to all monitor lizards. To assist with their arboreal lifestyle, black tree monitors have a prehensile grasping tail, which helps them hold onto tree branches.
