After the Storm

Second Chance Animal Shelter, Inc.
After the Storm
Subtitle Month Year
 Dear omss,

We hope that everyone is okay after Hurrican Irene.  This is yet another emergency that reminds us of the importance of being prepared, including for our pets, in case of emergency.

At the shelter, we faired reasonably well.  We did lose power and had a tree on the lines on our road.  We also had some damage to our partially installed septic system, but otherwise all is well.  Due to the construction, our generator was off line during this storm.  Thanks to the help of our volunteers, the animals were well cared for while we were without power.  Thank you to everyone that came in to help with the shelter pets during the aftermath of the storm.

Although the shelter was on alert as an emegerncy shelter for pets, we were thankfully not needed.  Other than a request for the loan of some crates to house a few pets at a local human shelter, everything went well.

We hope that everyone reading this also made it through the storm safely.

Update on Mr. Higgins!

Despite a few setbacks, Mr. Higgins seems to be on the road to recovery.  His hair is growing back and he is far more trusting of everyone around him.  He "talks" to the people he has come to know and enjoys his walks.
He still has to gain several more pounds before he can be neutered.  But, he is feeling much better and looks forward to people coming to visit him and spend time with him.  He has come a long way from that rainy night when he was dumped near our shelter.  He has learned that food will keep coming, he is not in pain and discomfort, and he has learned to trust again.  These are all big steps for Mr. Higgins and we are hopeful that he will be able to be put up for adoption in the coming weeks.  If you would like to help with Mr. Higgins medical bills, please go to our website and click on the donate button for Mr. Higgins at www.secondchanceanimals.org

New Facebook Page!
Due to the growing number of friends on our Facebook profile, we have moved this profile to a "page".  This new look gives us a lot more options to get information out to everyone - including a constantly updated link to our adoptable pets!  This is very exciting for us.  If you are not already a Facebook fan of ours, please "like" our new page at www.facebook.com/secondchanceanimals

We have over 2,200 likes already!!  Thank you to everyone that has become a Facebook fan of our page!!!

Renovation Update
The unusual weather of the past year has certainly slowed the renovations at our shelter.  But, things have been in high gear in the past month as the finishing touches are being done.  The septic system is being completed, the cement has been poured for the new outdoor play areas for the dogs, and the final touches on the inside of the building are being done.  We are extremely grateful to the donors, volunteers, and everyone involved that has made a much more comfortable expanded place for our temporary pet residents to have while we care for them and find them new homes.  Please stay tuned as we plan an open house for later in the fall so everyone can come and see the wonderful updates to our adoption center!

Spay/Neuter Program Expands!
Our Wellness Center continues to be doing tremedous work in helping to stop pet overpopulation in our area.  We are pleased to say that we are now working with 12 other shelters by providing them with low cost , high quality spay/neuter so that we can help as many pets as possible.  This helps to ensure that every pet adopted out in Worcester County is spayed/neutered BEFORE adoption.  In addition, these groups are also helping to identify pets in need of being fixed in their areas and we are providing spay/neuter to these pets.  This means that our shelter is successfully making a huge difference in the lives of pets in Worcester County and beyond!

Thank you to everyone for being a part of our Second Chance family!!

Sincerely,

 Sheryl Blancato
