Hello, America, it's your birthday! Well, at least it's the day on which the nation celebrates our sovereignty. Really, the idea of barbecuing, lighting sparklers and running around like maniacs, and indulging in perfectly ripe summer fruits sells itself, and we cherish our yearly opportunity to do just that. And, of course, what could be more revolutionary than celebrating compassionately? We're fairly certain that our rebellious forebears would approve of bucking the system with delicious, vegan treats.

Today, backyard barbecues and fireworks are as synonymous with Independence Day as our 1776 declaration of liberty, and rightly so. Simmering summer temperatures and hazy, starry evenings make July 4th the perfect time for grilling veggie dogs and burgers and relaxing underneath the night sky. Across the country, vegetarians of every stripe are stocking up their pantries with plant-based ingredients to prepare American classics such as lip-smacking Vegan Spare Ribs slathered in Savory Barbecue Sauce paired with tangy Zesty Potato Salad and Barbecue Baked Beans. Once you’ve indulged in all the suppertime standards, bring out the dairy-free dessert tray stacked with Classic Apple Pie, Luscious Lime Cheesecake, and Homemade Strawberry Ice Cream. Don’t be afraid to go a little over the top with your Fourth of July feast; remember, this isn’t just any ordinary birthday.

Fourth feast:
Black Bean Burgers
Spicy Vegan Sausages
Rustic Macaroni Salad
Too-Good Twice Baked Potatoes
Killer Kababs
Cheesy Potato Casserole
Crispy Country-Fried Seitan
Vegan Ranch Dressing

Hello, dessert!:
Fresh Strawberry Pie
Chocolate-Dipped Ice Cream Sandwiches
Frosty Popsicles
Marvelous Mississippi Mud Cake
Seasonal Berry Cobbler
Silky Banana Cream Pie
Vegan Strawberry Shortcake
Fluffy Lemon Coconut Pie
Vegan Fudgsicles

Here at the VNHQ, we love putting vegan spins on holiday traditions, so when it comes to tackling Independence Day, lets just say we get a little crazy. For more than 100 years, hot dog eating contests have been scheduled to coincide with Fourth of July festivities; so, in honor of good ol' American gluttony, host a veggie dog eating contest! Keep it in the family and invite close friends and relatives, or plan a community-wide, cruelty-free competition. If you’re considering a more low-key fête—read: less gluttonous—plan a simple pre-firework display picnic at home or in a local park or garden. Revelers can also shoot off fireworks from the comforts of home (so long as it's legal) by hosting a vegan cookout complete with a dairy-free ice cream bar. Alternatively, if fireworks and fried food don’t sound appealing, consider spending the day at an animal sanctuary and spread some compassion to furry friends.
